St James Church Barlborough Young People Guild

The above Guild was born in the 1970s when Father Bence was the Rector.  It was started to encourage the young people to think of other children in the world who were worse off than they were.   We started a coffee morning on the last Sunday of each month in the Rectory after the morning service to raise money for our first sponsored child in The Gambia.  This arrangement was later changed to the Church Institute, then when the Church had a kitchen and toilets put in, we held it at the back of church.

We have sponsored quite a few children since then and raised enough money each year to send the amount required, firstly through Action Aid, then changing to World Vision. As we got more and more successful, we decided to sponsor two children instead of one. The sponsorship ends if and when the child leaves education or the project is completed in the area where the child lives or the child and their family leave the village where the project is sited. The money is used for the child’s education and any needs in the village where they live ie basic needs such as water and sanitation.

We currently sponsor Joy Hebrom who lives in Panchbib, Bangladesh and Aung Min who lives in Amarapura, Myanmar.   We send each year the sum of £500 (£250 for each child) raised entirely from our coffee morning where we have a raffle too.  We also send birthday and Christmas gifts of money depending whether there is enough in the kitty and if not then a donor provides it.

We still hold the coffee morning on the last Sunday of each month. We are grateful for any unwanted gifts to be used as raffle prizes. All money raised goes to the children, nothing is taken from it. Tea, coffee, biscuits, sugar and some raffle prizes are kindly donated each month.
